About the Course

What is a Defensive Driving Course?

A defensive driving course is a government-approved training program that teaches licensed drivers how to anticipate hazards, avoid collisions, and make safer decisions on the road. In Nova Scotia, the 6-hour Defensive Driving Course (DDC) is certified by the Canada Safety Council and recognized by Access Nova Scotia (Registry of Motor Vehicles).

Unlike the full 35-hour New Driver's Education course (which is designed for people getting their first license), the defensive driving course is built for drivers who already have their license but need to address demerit points, upgrade from a 5N to full Class 5, or meet a government compliance requirement.

The course covers six core modules: hazard perception, collision avoidance, driver fitness and attention, the six conditions of driving (light, weather, road, traffic, vehicle, driver), speed management, and space management. It is designed to be practical and immediately applicable to real driving situations.
