Everything You Need to Know About the Defensive Driving Course
Why take this course?
Most students take this course for one of three reasons: to exit the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program early, to remove demerit points, or to lower insurance rates. It is fully approved by Access Nova Scotia.
How the "N" Removal Process Actually Works
If you are a newly licensed driver in Nova Scotia, you are likely in the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program. This means you have an "N" (Newly Licensed) on your license and specific restrictions, like zero blood alcohol and passenger limits.
To exit the GDL program, you must hold your 5N license for at least 2 years AND complete an approved driver improvement course. Without this course certificate, you cannot exit the N phase—even after your 2 years are up.
The Step-by-Step Process:
- 1
Complete the 6-Hour Online Course
You can do this in one sitting or spread it out over several days.
- 2
Receive Your Certificate
Official certificate issued within 24 hours of completion.
- 3
Submit to Access Nova Scotia
Email or bring your certificate to Access NS. They will update your record and send you a letter confirming your exit date.
Understanding Point Removal
Demerit points can lead to license suspension and higher insurance premiums. In Nova Scotia, you can use this defensive driving course to remove demerit points from your driving record.
This is a "once every 5 years" opportunity. If you have accumulated points due to speeding tickets or other infractions, taking this course is the single most effective way to protect your license.
